With the advent of manufacturing stars nowadays, the record companies forgot the basic fundamentals of their business model. With the pressure of pleasing shareholders they have to make money now. Whatever happened to the A & M, Capitol records of the past. A & M records for example was Herb Alpert (we went to the same high school, woo hoo), they signed and developed talented artists (The Police, e.g.).

If you draft an athlete for your team, you want that athlete to have certain characteristics and traits such as game intelligence, good instincts, quickness (not necessarily speed), instead of being fast, can you play fast, etc etc etc. That's why the consistently good teams even though they don't draft high have good scouts that recognize a player with good fundamentals.

So what happened to the records companies??? They blame downloading for their lack of sales or drastic drop in sales. Is it really? I would say not. I would say it's a contributing factor, remember correlation does not equal causation. I say it's suits who don't play instruments, don't have a clue of the difference between a pedal point and a counterpoint (you musician know what I'm talking about) they're the ones determining what they think we'll like. So let's do a simple mathematical equation: Suits that don't know music + crappy music + downloads + lack of true music business fundamentals = drop in sales.

I was listening to the Howard Stern show today and Cindy Lauper came on she sang "All through the night" live in the studio. It brought back a lotta memories of my Jr High days and sent chills up my spine. It also made me appreciate truly talented singers in the backdrop of the American Idol and manufactured stars era.

So the question becomes what makes a good singer? Good looks? Mick Jagger, Steve Tyler, they knew how to make their looks work for them. Biggie Smalls, 50 cent, likewise.
Strong voice? Karen Carpenter, she knew how to interpret the lyrics that were presented to her.

Let's also look at background, Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne similar backgrounds, similar sound, themes in their lyrics. The only difference is that Bruce has the bigger commercial success.

Comparing the American Idol finalists.

David Archuleta - relatively strong voice, has the crooner singing style. But when he sings he sings like he's singing mechanically (vocally trained style) without personality.

David Cook - strong voice, has a little more personality but lacks a certain something, he lacks the "IT"

This is Nike Ardilla (may she rest in peace), she was about 17 y.o. when this song came out (keep in mind this is Indonesia in about 1995), so the video and the recording quality may not be that great but listen to how polished she was at 17 y.o. Singers like her just aren't around anymore, why is that? Is it because life is too easy?

Statistically they say women have more legs and commitment on these social network things. I agree from my personal empirical evidence. I'm a member of so many networks, e.g. Facebook, MySpace, Friendster, Yahoo360, Yahoo Groups, too many others I signed up for and forgot all about. Anyways man I get burned out trying to keep up.

But I finally found a spot that's an one stop shop for everything I want. IMEEM. I'm a big fan of Crayon Shinchan and when I first discovered this cartoon by accident I was so frustrated by lack of content, information, etc etc etc. I created this group on this site and there's more information here than anywhere from what I've seen (OK, maybe English language content).

http://www.imeem.com/groups/sV4q08Dp,shin_chan_mania/

I also created a Robotech group here also. I really love this site.

For those of you that doesn't know who Phil Keaggy is, Guitar Player named him "The Best Guitarist You Never Heard Of". There's also an urban legend where someone asked Jimi Hendrix who he thought the best guitarist was and he said I don't know, ask Phil Keaggy.

I love the net and the anonymity of being able to express your opinions and the communication it offers. But what I hate are the bulletin board pencil neck geeks that can't talk s**t to your face and then on top of that they gotta post as anonymous. I challenged every last one of these punks to say the s**t to my face, still no takers. I come to the realization if your girly man trapped in a girly manish physique I guess this is your only outlet without getting your ass kicked that's why people like them are the ones that abuse animals, women, children, basically anything that's weaker than them. Have a nice life y'all.

I consider myself to be very eclectic in my musical tastes. I like Heavy Metal, Rock, Classic Rock, Alternative, pop, even some bubble gum pop, a lotta different Asian music, African music, Punk, you name it, if sounds good I'll like it.

Even for bubble gum pop, let's take Brittney Spears for example, her songs are bubble gum pop, but she's good (well her producers) at what she does for the genre she does that's all I ask, not that I'm a Brittney Spears fan.

In Korea, most of the music is simple bubble gum pop, ballads, dance music or Koreanized (changed to fit Korean palette) R & B.

Anyways, I like a lot of the female singers (the good ones), because they have their own styles and have some personality in their singing. But the dudes, dude man, like have your own style and personality please!!!!!! 98% of them have them vocally trained singing style and sing in the crooner style, and when I ask the women why this is the case, they tell me it's because the girls like that style. So I guess this is a case of the chicken and the egg. Girls like that crooner, vocally trained style or do they sing like that because...well you get the picture.

I haven't played the guitar for ages. Living in Korea, I couldn't find guitar strings, and every other place I've been to I didn't justify paying $10 for crappy strings that wasn't Martin, D'Addario's etc.

Then the thought occurred to me why don't I go to www.auction.co.kr (ebay bought them a few years back, same concept), I searched for guitar strings and I found Olympia strings, 3 for 4,900 won (or about $4.75US), I got it in a couple of days and I loved it!!! I'm a pimp for Olympia strings now (Korean company). But the auction purchase experience was terrible, all these ACtive X installs1!!!!! Why don't these people take a page out of Apple's iTunes experience???

Anyways I wanted the 10 gauge strings for my acoustic guitar, they sent me 12 gauge!!!! My fingers are killing me!!!!! I promised myself not to buy an electric til I get good on the acoustic or that I'm back to my old level or better.

Anyways this is my practice regime:

Learn a song a week.
Metronome practice with chords:
1st I just do a 1, 2, 3, 4 strum for about 15 to 20 minutes with just one chord then I'll do 2 chords, then I'll mix up the strum.

Single note: 1st I'll just play quarter notes with the metronome, then 8th notes, then 16th notes, so I spend about 15 minutes per...

Then learning a song, I'm focusing on acoustic songs since I have an acoustic at the time. So far I learned Knockin' On Heaven's Door (Bob Dylan), learning Romance by Anonymous, and Blowing in the Wind.

The guitar I have right now is a cheap Korean guitar that my half-sister in Pusan gave me. I always tell people that it's not the guitar, but the player. I finally realize it now, so I made a commitment to become good again before I upgrade, plus I gotta let my sister know I'm playing her guitar.

Please pray that I develop callouses real quick.

Oh that's right, we're the poor ass Koreans that can't do s**t by ourselves, I served in the US Air Force too, you don't see me pounding my chest, I served not for the money nor lack of job opportunities but to say thank you for the US intervention in the Korean war. Like I said, if you hate it so much...leave, ain't nobody stopping you, you talk all tough (like a studio gangster), just leave...oh you're afraid of a little AWOL. That wouldn't stop the truly motivated, do your jail time and get it over with if it's so crappy. See it's chicken s**ts that talk about this crap, so ironic. You're the manifestation of all the racism I experienced in the US Air Force, people like you and the teachers and other foreigners wonder why Korean people are hostile towards foreigners. Although most people are decent, you're the one that makes everybody think everybody's like you (all the foreigners). Unmotivated punk.

ok, whatever, like I said if you're really motivated you'd go AWOL do your jail time and get it over with. It's always the turncoats that turn their own people the worst.

As they always say, "Ain't nobody that'll help you than your own people and ain't nobody gonna screw you thank your own people."

So stay confused, apparently if you have so much crap to say about Korean people which you claim to be, than what are you??? Oh you're the exception, please forgive me for my ignorance that you're the one Korean person despite your appearance, genetics, heritage, you're above everybody. You're different, ok I got it.

As a matter of fact why don't you bring your punk ass in front of my face and talk that smack. You're probably one of them dudes in the weight room that never does squats and see things in the mirror that aren't there.

yep, warm sunny personality. i have no idea what you're talking about with the turncoat business. you have the "us vs. them" mentality on ethnic heritage. i have all the appearances of a korean but since i was raised in the states since the age of six, i do get on well with an international crowd of folks. you on the other hand are just a bitter bitter man. it's not any of our faults that we have run across discrimination and racism. i get it backwards from koreans cos i am an american citizen.

It's not an us against them mentality, I lived in the states since 6 also, and I have a lot more international friends than you do. That's not the point, the point is you don't know who the hell you are and the more you denigrate your own people the more you denigrate yourself. And stop talking like you're the only Korean person with US citizenship. I do care if foreigners talk crap about Korea, but when an ethnic Korean talks crap, then I take issue.

So, ok you're right, you have a US citizenship, you're high and mighty and since you're so right there's nothing more to talk about, because anybody that disagrees with you is a moron, bitter, ill-advised, etc. So you live your life and believe that you're whatever you think you are and seek approval from whomever it is you seek approval from, apparently Korean people aren't worth a crap, oh last time I checked you're Korean therefore since Korean people aren't worth a crap...let's do the math x = y.

Have a nice life.

Some of these facebook entries really pissed me off!!!! Especially from a Korean dude that's in the Army. Why is it that a minority will talk the most crap about their own race? Even more than a white person would ever would??? Is it that they're so ashamed of who they are and wish they weren't what they are and by putting their own people down they subconsciously think they're getting approval from the people they're trying to be or please?

The older I get the more the old expression I heard when I was younger rings truer every day, "Ain't nobody gonna help you more than your own people or ain't nobody gonna screw you worse than your people."

Even in my own experience whenever I met a Korean person in LA that wanted to be "white" would always screw me. Why? They want to be the token? By screwing their own people, well you get the picture.

Whatever happened to "respect yourself first, then you can respect others" axiom I was taught as a kid? Did society in general become all about looking out for #1? This really saddens my heart (after the pissed off ness wears off). Now I know why my dad was always broken hearted. I understand why his writings were always so idealistic. I realize now that my idealism also caused me many heartaches.

I hate all these people coming to Korea to teach English, well I guess that's a little strong. I hate all the bitching and moaning they do. They say Korean people are racists, yet when I point out the racial profiling done by law enforcement, genocide committed by their forefathers to establish their nation, disproportionate amount of minorities on death row, unfair sentencing all of a sudden they say their country's not perfect and every country has its own problems. Then they try to say it's easier for Asians to open up businesses in Western countries than it is here. Then when I point out the fact that you need at least a minimum of a green card or you need to get a business green card (500,000 US is the minimal requirement with all sorts of contingencies etc), then they say well you can't invest here or do commercial transactions, then when I debunk that myth they get mad!!

Because I don't subscribe to the point of view that the Western culture is superior, I'm called a racist even by my own people (Korean folks that grew up in said Western countries). So just to shut them the hell up, I say, if I don't kowtow to them, yes I'm a racist then. Then I turn it around on them and say why don't you say something critical of white people, and they can't. I said what's the matter, you fear them, don't you. They say they don't but they can't say anything critical of white people.

Why is it that Korean people are so quick to criticize ourselves to defend the shit Westerners talk about us. I say go to hell with that attitude.

One example there's this old dude I knew (about 46 y.o. at the time), he used to tell me that people used to tell him "Go back to where you came from" and his response was "Hey, I have every right to be here, I pay taxes, etc." I told him that was weak. Whenever a white person told me that bullshit, I would reply, at least I got a land I can call my own, wherever you've been someone else was already there, now you wanna come at me with that bullshit again. They'd shut the hell up and call me a racist. I just can't win. If I'm proud to be Korean, then I'm a blind nationalist and anti-Western. If I'm pro-Western ideology, I'm a sell-out/banana.

It's so ironic, because I have an American friend (blonde hair/blue eye boy) that speaks better Korean than I do even his pronunciation is superior to mine. But his mannerism, intonation, body language is all Korean, so once the novelty wears off, Korean girls view him as a Korean dude, whereas when I speak Korean (I have an American pronunciation of Korean), I don't have the same effect. Ironically when I speak Japanese I can pronounce it like a native.

Another thing that bothers me is that people always say Korea had slavery also. Yes we did, so did the Romans, Greeks etc. The difference prior to North and South American slavery is that slaves were spoils of war at that time. The American slavery was solely based on skin color. Why you ask? Prior to slavery there was indentured servitude, it was so harsh a lot of servants ran away and they were able to blend in, so they said hey Africans can't blend in. And guess who the biggest financial backers were. Yes, the Dutch. Heck they're the biggest single investors in the US even today, yet they say Japan is taking over, oi vay.

Basically I don't care (actually I do) if people bitch and moan, but please have a historical or factual basis of your bitching and moaning. I don't want to hear bitching about the lack of English here, shit you're in Korea what the hell do you expect. When we go to your country you expect us to speak your language but when you come here we're supposed to speak your language.

A couple of years ago I would have called this thinking "White Supremacy" thinking. Because many Western countries have become multi-cultured, it has now become "A Cultural Supremacy" ideology because a lot of non-whites have that "This (Western) culture I grew up in is superior than yours."

My advice see the world. I did. I lived in Tokyo, Seattle, L.A. NE Florida, I've been to DC, the midwest, Tennessee, Arkansas, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, etc. My point is don't use what you know and see as the representation of everybody/everything.

Just can't win.

I was raised by parents that always told me to respect my elders and from a young age I was always deferral. I went through a phase of disrespect. Then I came to my senses. I see youngsters and even old fools nowadays not remembering where they came from or what their folks went through for them to enjoy what they enjoy today.

In the gym I especially respect the old guys in the gym with great physiques. Nowadays in Korea, it's fashionable to get into shape, but what about the guys in their late 40's plus?? They don't have the equipment we take for granted today, and there just wasn't the social acceptance there is today of working out yet they did it, I respect that.

Let's look at music before there was all these cool rock bands, there was Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, etc. Yngwie Malmsteen got all this love, yet it's Rithie Blackmore the boy is copying yet he never acknowledge him in his interviews. Ritchie was the first hard rock guitarist to openly acknowledge his love for classical music, hell he even played with a philharmonic orchestra Yngwie never did this. Ritchie is so versatile he is now playing renaissance music for Blackmore's Knight.

Even athletes, let's look at basketball, it was Magic and Larry Bird that gave the players of today the big contracts they got today, they were the ones that made the league grow and Jordan took it to the next level.

Let's pay homage to the old school, remember if not for them we wouldn't be where we are today, I know this may fall on deaf ears. Cuz if we don't pay homage to the old school we will have a short run but if you notice the ones with longevity acknowledge the old school.

Poor girl, they say she cancelled her shows because of "Exhaustion". When I'm dieting and working out hard I become very exhausted and even caught a fever a couple of times 2 years running. I'm now smart about my weight loss training. Have you seen what Amy Winehouse looks like lately? And she wants to keep up her party lifestyle??? No food + partying = physical breakdown!!!! calories = energy, if you don't have enough in the gas tank to fuel your partying, activities, etc. = severe exhaustion.

I thought John Dvorack was the ultimate Mac hater. Sure he's cranky and skeptical when a new technological product comes out and you're pissed at him at that time because of his wait and see approach. Molly Wood on the other hand just hates everything Apple, talks crap about it, has nothing good to say about it and even if she does like it, she won't admit it or come around and admit like John Dvorack would. Before Veronica Belmont left, at least she would stick up for the Mac, now I'm thinking about never listening to the podcast again not because Veronica left but because she talks too much crap.

BTW, for those Mac haters and Molly defenders or those drinking the haterade. I do not own a Mac, never owned a Mac, will buy a Mac when the 10.5 comes out or at least by next year. I do own an iPod with video and I love it!!!!!!! I just know that the Mac is a superior machine especially when it comes to audio/video production, graphic design etc etc etc. I never was in that industry therefore I never saw the need to own a Mac. Now that I am starting to podcast and looking into video production, I know I will definitely go with the Mac, especially the Leopard, it will be the first mainstream 64 bit processing computer.

I need suggestions for a new podcast to listen to.

I'm so pissed that I gotta listen to Shinchan to cheer myself up.

This E-Ticket article from ESPN really pissed me off, there's a picture of a Chinese man and woman, the woman looks fairly attractive but the man, well you be the judge. So why is it that the Western media always portray Asian men as non-sexual, undesirable, etc etc? People who have a commentary for everything really bug the hell out of me. For example when I worked for 1800ussearch, the top 5 salespeople of the week rotated amongst 4 other people and myself. Yet there was this one punk that thought Asian people were s docile, submissive bunch based on his no mind of her own having Asian g/f. This dude would try to give me advice on how to be better. So the question I asked him was, "Where's my name on the ranking chart and where's your name on the ranking chart? When you're at my level, then we can have a conversation." He would get pissed and call me arrogant. As I alluded to in my earlier post about unhealthy egos, he has it, whereas my ego is healthy. Why would I take advice from someone at the bottom of the food chain on how to survive? I know what it takes to be good, so I appreciate people who are good at something. For example, I won't tell a classical pianist how to be better because I can't play the piano that well, and I know what it takes to be that good, so I leave them the hell alone.

Another example is my girlfriend, she tells me if I do this/that, I'll be a better English teacher, and I have to keep telling her, look I don't know your job therefore I respect you enough to not tell you how to do your job better because you do what you do everyday so you would know better than me how to be more efficient so I don't have any commentary on how to do it better. I also tell her, you teach something for a while then talk to me.

I really hate armchair quarterbacks. I just want to punch them in the mouth. These are the people that have no talent, work ethic, discipline, passion or all of the above or whatever and what they want to do is tell us what to do so they can brag to their friends alter and take credit for making us better and I ain't playing that game, now sirreee!!!

The first 6 months you lift weights, you get the 1/4" to 1/2" or all the way up to 1" growth of muscles. Because of this a lot of guys I hear in the gym say stupid shit like "Oh, I don't want to be big as the guys in the magazines." First of all these guys don't lift heavy enough to get that big or lack the dedication, commitment, sacrifice, discipline or the passion to get there. Secondly they don't eat enough nor do they have pharmaceutical help to get there nor do they have the years of training behind them. The guys you see in the magazines have at least 5 years (the exceptional ones) minimal training behind them. The average guy you see in the magazines have at least 10 years of training behind them plus they do 400 plus pounds bench presses, 500 plus pounds of squats. These are guys that barely push 200 pounds on the bench press thinking they'll get there.

Here's my question: Why is it that if we take up golf we know we can't be like Tiger, or if we take up basketball we know we can't all be like Mike or even tennis or baseball, we don't have those delusions. Yet why is it that when people (men and women) take up weightlifting they're so delusional to think that they can look like the people they see in the magazines?

If you have any thoughts on this please let me know!!!!!!! I still can't figure this one out for the life of me!!!

This is in no particular order:

Phil Keaggy - Play Thru Me, Ph'lip Side - If you want to hear a guitarist who can play rock with a pop sensibility, along with some fusion tracks, rocking rock tracks and even super amazing acoustic guitar work, this is a must have for all guitarists.

Stevie Wonder - Songs in the keys of life, vol 1 & 2 - The violin riff from Gangsta's Paradise from Coolio is sampled from this album (Past time paradise). Great song writing, counterpoints, this album in my opinion is the original fusion album.

TQ - They Never Saw Me Coming - I know there's not much guitar in here but it's a great Hip Hop/R&B concept album ala Pink Floyd "The Wall" which leads to

Pink Floyd - "The Wall" - Nuff Said, I know the diehards say "Dark Side Of The Moon", I heard it, to me "The Wall" is better.

Frank Zappa - Joe's Garage, Vol 1, 2 & 3 - Introduces us to a 14 y.o. Steve Vai

Brian McKnight - Anytime - he's the last of a dying breed of the singer/songwriter multi - instrumentalist.

Prince - Purple Rain

Oops I forgot to add 2 more, if there's any more I think of, I may do another addendum.

Nashville Guitarists - Why you ask? #1, a nashville guitarist can play any metal or jazz riff, but the other way around is not always the case. Maybe this story may help. Jeff Beck was once in Nashville and a guitarist asked him if he could borrow his guitar for a session and Jeff Beck, "Sure, go ahead." and after the session the dude thanked him and Jeff Beck was so in awe that he later said, "I'm glad these guys stay in Nashville."

Les Paul - There was an old beer commercial back in the days, I believe it was Michelob, and some hot shot youngster was riffing away on his guitar and Les Paul asked him if he could play, afterwards the youngster says hey you're pretty good, what's your name? Les Paul replied, "It's on the guitar, kid." Smiles and walked away, classic!

In my opinion, there are 2 entities that should never be remade:

#1 Any Motown tunes - have you heard a Motown tune remake and felt something was missing? Musicianship that's what it is. A little history here, prior to Motown, jazz and blues was king. When the new sound came out, a lot of these great jazz musicians at the time were hungry so Barry Gordy put them to work, so when you have these jazz guitarists, amazing jazz guitarists and musicians backing the Motown singers, and you get dudes or dudettes that are relatively competent, well you know what you get...

Case in point: Stevie Wonder only knew 3 chords on the piano when he started out, but hanging out Motown gave him a musical education that's the equivlance of Julliard, any school in Vienna, Berklee, and any other musical institutions combined. He slept and ate with these guys, this is why when you compare early Stevie Wonder to his later albums, I guess only real musicians will only understand what I'm talking about.

#2: The Beatles - John and Paul were very accomplished musicians. Paul was classically trained and they both were multi-instrumental. When I was young, there was a famous saying, "Only the Beatles can do the Beatles."

I'm gonna add one more here:

#3 Bob Marley - There's only one. Nuff said

My buddy cherryteresa gave me a great idea to blog about. When she was talking about Winger it brought back some memories from back in the days (oops, I may be hinting my age here, oh no!). Anyways this is my list of guitarists who I felt didn't get their due props (this will cover many genres, cuz I hate listening to just one genre of music), this is not in any particular order:

Phil Keaggy - This dude's amazing, just because he played Christian music, I felt he didn't get the props he deserved in the mainstream, although Guitar Player tried, calling him the best guitarist you never heard of.

Al Anderson - (of Bob Marley and the Wailers fame), he should be credited along with Bob Marley for creating the reggae sound (at least the rhythm and lead guitar parts of it). Listen to "Exodus", this song shows he could rock if he wanted to. "Stir It Up", very funky and the riff could have fit in any soul song. "No Woman, No Cry", has that bluesy solo at the end. "Jammin" combines the reggae rhythm, rock/blues guitar solo, this song contains all the elements. Also listen to "Could You Be Loved" and "What Goes Around Comes Around"

Gary Moore - This is a man who played all the styles he chose to play well, very well. When he was rockin', he was great. When he does the blues, it's great. When he got into his fusion phase he was great. How many guitarists can you say is this great? I can only think of 2. Steve Morse and Phil Keaggy.

Steve Morse - This is a man, who can rock, jazz it up, classical if chooses, even country music and he can dixie pick on that bad boy. He was named the best overall guitarist 3 years in a row by GP magazine back in the days. But I still think he's super underrated cuz when I discuss guitarists with other guitarists his name never comes up unless I do and they say, "WHO?"

Nile Rogers (of the Chic fame) - I credit him as the father of the funky music riffs. I believe the modern dance music won't stand the test of time compared to the disco music of the 70's. Why you ask? Because the modern dance music is sequencer programming lacking a certain soul that the old school disco had, what is this soul you ask? Musicianship, that's what! Listen to the guitar riffs and the bass lines and even the horns on these old disco tunes, when I was young (elementary school age), I thought it was gay, but the more I studied music, the more I heard the amazing musicianship in these songs.
